In March 2022, the author of the exhibition idea, Alexandra Arkhipova, asked the subscribers of her Telegram-channel "(Non)entertaining anthropology" (https://t.me/anthro_fun) to send examples of anonymous anti-war street art, on the condition that they had personally seen the pictured object. This request spread widely, and people sent photos from all over Russia. The creation and processing of the collection by the exhibition team continued from March 2022 to February 2023. As a result, the exhibition presents 476 exhibits from 48 cities and towns of Russia.

Not being art historians, we did not aim to select artistically valuable artefacts. That is why "street art" in the exhibition’s title is somewhat misleading. What is important for us is the creative intention of the authors of anti-war graffiti, the search for their own way of communicating their thoughts to the viewer, the choice of place, the play with surrounding signs and space.

We were interested in the diversity of types of expression, placement and artistic execution, so when selecting examples we were guided by the principle of selecting "every creature in a pair" and we did not take repeated texts with the same codes. As a result, we cannot draw any statistical conclusions about the frequency of graffiti distribution by type or city - this is not what we were aiming for.

Read more about the exhibition, the different messages of the pieces included and the context of street art and its repression in Russia.

CaZgo200

"Cargo200" (KIA) is a Soviet military slang term for "killed in action" used during the war in Afganistan in the 1980's. It became popular again at the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. In the Russian, the "z" sound of the word "GruZ" is Latinized and capitalized to make a reference to the letter "Z," one of the symbols of Russia's invasion. This inscription was written above the advertisement promoting a private military company. The message can thus be decoded as follows: "Russia will kill you by sending you off to this war and it will hide all the information about you when you are killed."

Here, eat this. - But that's shit! - It's not shit, it's a special stinking substance, eat it and keep your mouth shut!

A reference to the Russian Newspeak (as in Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four) of 2022, where one should say "Special Military Operation" instead of "war". The authors of such graffiti are fighting propaganda in Russia by reminding those who see graffiti that propaganda constantly swaps black and white, just as in Orwell's book.

Bucha

In March 2022, the Russian military brutally murdered many residents of the town of Bucha in the Kiev region. In the Russian Federation, it is not allowed to talk about this; any mention of these murders is punishable under Article 207.3 of the Criminal Code (dissemination of knowingly false information about the Russian Army). Several people have already received seven or more years in prison for discussing the murders in Bucha

Greetings to you, dear granny Manya! I will write you to save this space of memory during the war. Is it possible it will be endless? It seems like a horrible dream. One wants to break away and to wake up. To think about you, remembering the apricots in your garden. My Moscow friends didn’t understand why I don’t like apricots. I overate them every summer, they lay everywhere, and my shoes were covered in yellowish mush. I only came to love them years later. But here in Moscow there are no such apricots – as sweet and honeyed as those taken right off the vine. We liked to gather them in our childhood, because we liked to climb onto the tree and to watch from the top on your house. To watch the hens, to listen to the words carried by the wind, and see what happens behind the fence – slow, hot, beloved and tasty Ukrainian summer.

In April 2022, an artist began writing letters to her deceased grandmothers and hanging them in a Moscow park. In doing so, she aimed to draw the attention of park visitors to the fact that exactly the same people live in Ukraine.

We live, not feeling the earth beneath us At ten paces our words evaporate. But when there’s the will to crack open our mouths our words orbit the Kremlin mountain man. Murderer, peasant killer. His fingers plump as grubs. His words drop like lead weights. His laughing cockroach whiskers. The gleam of his boot rims. by Osip Mandelshtam

This is a poem written by a Russian poet Osip Mandelshtam (1891-1938) about Stalin (translated by Darran Anderson).

It is not a 'special operation' - it's a war

It has been prohibited by a special law to call the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops a "war". Russian citizens had to use the euphemism "special military operation" instead of the word "war". Many graffiti are aimed at showing that the clean and incomprehensible words hide a terrible reality.

Enough, please stop the violence. In the reinforced concrete crypts slugs creep along the mossy walls But I want to see the sky, I awaken to life. Sprouts stubbornly climb like an indestructible pommel even through rusted iron and even hard stone is crumbling. Outside, there's so much light, a dog drinks from a puddle, I'm busting my way forward as a band of spiky branches. I sprinkle my white all over the rumbling of cars and slush And greet the sky with explosions of red berries, Explosions of red berries. Across underground bunkers, among the wreckage of cannons Soldiers of fallen armies Are wandering with their chests shot through. My roots are intertwined in a cramped mass grave, I'll tell them, "The wars are over!" I'll tell them, "You have won!" Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version) There are slugs on the mossy walls in concrete vaults, But I want to see the sky, I'm waking for life. Persistent sprouts are pushing up like indestructible forcers, They go even through rusted iron, through stone that becomes broken. There is so much light outside, a dog is drinking from a puddle, I'm pushing outward, I'm a squadron of prickly shoots. I'm covering roaring cars and the slush with white petals, I'm greeting the sky with the red explosions of berries, With the red explosions of berries. The soldiers of fallen armies are wondering there In underground bunkers among broken weapons, With bullets in their smashed chests. My roots are tangled in a narrow collective grave, I'll tell them: "Wars are over!" I'll tell them: "You won!"

Lyrics from Ukranian band Fleur's song "Wild Rose"

They lie us about the "Kiev regime"! The regime is the lack of rotation among the authorities, the ban on rallies and independent media. Presidents are replacing each other in Ukraine, protests are taking place, opposition politicians appear on television. And what about Russia?

Russian officials contemptuously refer to the Ukrainian government as the "Kiev regime," thus pretending that Ukraine is not a normal state with a legitimate government. This is a typical example of Russian "Newspeak" (as in Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four).

If this arrow flew here, then the rocket will fly too

Activists of the movement "Vesna" held an anti-war performance in Moscow. They posted arrow-pierced leaflets in Zaryadye about important initiatives of the movement: actions on May 9, campaigns for impeachment, petitions against the law against "fake news” and the demands of the anti-war movement.

Let every apple orchard blossom black, black in mourning. Ah, how the lilac smells! You’re without feeling. Nothing, Nixon said it: “You’re a bum.” All the dead are bums. It’s not their crime. You lie in the grass, a melting candy in your mouth, done with dressing in new clothes, done with books. You used to be a student. You studied fine arts. But other arts exist, of blood and terror, and headsmen with a genuius for the axe. Who was Hitler? A cubist of gas chambers. In the name of all flowers I curse your works, you architect of lies, maestros of murder! Mothers of the world whisper “O God, God!” and seers are afraid to look ahead. Death dances rock-and-roll upon the bones of Vietnam, Cambodia – On what stage is it booked to dance tomorrow? Rise up, Tokyo girls, Roman boys, take up your flowers against the common foe. Blow the world’s dandelions up into a blizzard! Flowers, to war! Punish the punishers! Tulip after tulip, carnation after carnation rip out of your tidy beds in anger, choke every lying throat with earth and root! You, jasmine, clog the spinning blades of mine-layers. (This translation of the poem by Anthony Kahn was published by City Lights Books in 1970.)

Two blue and two yellow sticky notes (the colours of the Ukranian flag) with text from Yevgeni Yevtushenko's well-known poem, known as "Flowers and Bullets" in English. The literal translation of the Russian title is "Flowers are Better than Bullets"

"I will tell you a story of a country, | where the light is held captive by the darkness, | where the mouths are sealed, | where you should learn to keep silent if you want to live, || where for a single phrase you will be put away at once. || I will tell you a story of a country, | which blundered into a war, | where they keep talking crap to us | that the entire world threatens to attack us, || where the brains are so full of drivel | it can only be moved with a shovel. || I will tell you a story of a country, | where Satan was allowed into the temple. | Where a mother sends her son to a certain death, | where a priest tells you to kill. || Rosy-cheeked and broad at their shoulders, | the chekists are kneeling there. || A murderer is ruling that country, a villain and a criminal as per Article 353 of the Russian Criminal Code [Chekists are officers of Cheka, The All-Russian Extraordinary Commission, an early predecessor of the KGB. Art. 353. deals with planning and launching a war of aggression.]

A song by the famous Russian rock singer/songwriter Andrey Makarevich

No Var Z

The Latin letter "V" is used instead of the Russian letter "В" - 1st letter of word "Война" (War). This also is a reference to the "World War Z" film (2013). The Russian authorities used the letters Z and V as signs of support for war. Therefore, Z is compared, for example, to the swastika, and those who support the war are called zombie.

WHY?

Such graffiti draws the attention of passers-by to the senselessness of the war with Ukraine. These statements specifically consist of only one word. It is possible that this is a way to avoid punishment for anti-war graffiti (if the graffiti does not contain the word war or Ukraine, it will be difficult for the court to prove what it is about)

Happy Easter! Millions of Christians celebrate the resurrection of a man who incited people to revolt against Rome, organised unauthorised rallies, called for the overthrow of the regime, insulted the feelings of the faithful, spoke out against war and demanded we loved our neighbours. He was crucified. But he was the one who was right.

The Easter flyer retells the biography of Jesus Christ as if it were the biography of a political activist in Russia. Every single activity mentioned in the leaflet is currently illegal in the Russian Federation.

Explanatory Team. We repair the roof, install windows: It is not "prices rise," it's "rouble falls." The "Special Operation" is a war. Ukraine's love cannot be forced. NATO doesn't give a damn about us. Our neighbors don't have more Nazis than we do. Soldiers are needed alive, healthy and at home. The President went crazy, and everyone is afraid to object to him. Your children love you and want to live humanly. [Tear-off coupons:] - Сlear enough, thank you. - So that's how it is. - Yes, it's time to end this. - Wow. - Thank you, it's easier now. - Oh, if only they explained it on TV like this.

The poster imitates private ads featuring tear-off coupons. It has been prohibited by a special law to call the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops a "war". Russian citizens had to use the euphemism "special military operation" instead of the word "war". Many graffiti are aimed at showing that the clean and incomprehensible words hide a terrible reality.

The Great Patriotic Specoperation [Special Operation]

Journalists and ordinary people cannot call the war a "war," but instead must use the term "Special Military Operation," a Newspeak term (as in Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four) that appeared after February 24, 2022. These types of inscriptions mock these taboos by inserting the word "Special Operation" into various sustained speech constructions, thereby creating a comic effect

200 [list of dead from Tatarstan] Do you want more "special operations"?

"Cargo200" (KIA) is a Soviet military slang term for "killed in action" used during the war in Afganistan in the 1980's. It became popular again at the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. In the Russian, the "z" sound of the word "GruZ" is Latinized and capitalized to make a reference to the letter "Z," one of the symbols of Russia's invasion. This inscription was written above the advertisement promoting a private military company. The message can thus be decoded as follows: "Russia will kill you by sending you off to this war and it will hide all the information about you when you are killed."

Left (from a joke about a conversation from Gianni Rodari's "Le Avventure di Cipollino"): — Why do they put up with it? There are so many of them! — Because they are vegetables, this is a tale about vegetables. Right (from Nikolai Nosov's "Dunno on the Moon"): “And who are these policemen of yours?” — asked Herring. “Bandits!” said Spike with irritation. “Trust my word, bandits! The real duty of the police is to protect the population from robbers, but in reality they are only protecting the rich. And the rich are the real robbers. It's just that they rob us under the cover of the laws they invent themselves. What difference does it make whether I am robbed lawfully or not? It is all the same to me!" "It is all looks pretty weird here" — said Screw — "Why then do you listen to the police and to these... what do you call them? The rich?" "You can't help it when they have everything, land and factories, and money, and guns too!"

Two small posters with quotations from and references to two books for children that are quite famous in Russia: "Le avventure di Cipollino" (1951) by Gianni Rodari and "Dunno on the Moon" (1964) by Nikolay Nosov. In Russia, the word "vegetable" bears negative connotations in vernacular (it means that someone is passive and blindly obedient), and is also used as a rather rude reference to patients in a vegetative state. In "Dunno on the Moon," the utopian communist "shortlings" (an inch- or two high fairy tale folk invented by Nikolai Nosov) from Earth visit the Moon and discover a caricature shortling capitalist society living inside the Moon on a small "inner Moon" (the Moon is portrayed as a nut-like structure with a thin outer crust and an "inner Moon" in the centre). Kozlik (Goaty) is a local "loonie" shortling (an odd-jobber) interrogated by two "Earth" shortlings: Selyodochka (Herring), an astronomer from the City of the Sun, and Vintik (Screw), an inventor from the Flower City.

WAR kills your father, your brother, your son. WAR turns your savings into candy wrappers, your salary into pennies. WAR will force you to eat bread and water, giving half of your salary for it. WAR deprives you and your children of the future. Turn off the TV, say NO to WAR!

Perfect love casts out fear

Fragment from the Bible: “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.” (1 John 4:18). If the reader recognizes the quote, he will understand that he is being encouraged not to be afraid to speak out against war.

George Orwell 1984 [crossed out] 2022

A reference to George Orwell's classic dystopian novel 1984, which depicts a dictatorial regime similar to Stalin's. Replacing 1984 with 2022 clearly shows what the author of the graffiti thinks about the current regime in Russia

People, we have a hole in the deck! Are you an expert in shipbuilding? If there is a hole, then it should be here. Aren't you ashamed of talking like that about our boat? Let everyone do his job! And me - I’m proud of our boat! I like it even more with a hole! Don’t be negative, guys! I'm not listening to you - just eating my food. The situation of course, is ambiguous... And you were going to repair it? Shut up, smart guy! Jonathan has had two holes in the boat and nothing has happened.. Technically it's not a hole, but a special service port!

This graffiti offers a parody of pointless social media debates. Instead of uniting and fighting against the war, people shift the blame on each other.

Peace [crossed out] Labor ? May [crossed out]

"Peace, Labor, May" is the typical Soviet slogan of May 1 demonstrations. The author of the graffiti crossed out the words peace and May and put a question mark next to the word labor. By doing so, he shows that the war has destroyed basic values.

War is a Special Operation. Liberty is treason. Ignorance is patriotism. #nowar #noputin

A reference to "Newspeak" (as in Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four): "WAR IS PEACE / FREEDOM IS SLAVERY / IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH." The authors of such graffiti are fighting propaganda in Russia by reminding those who see graffiti that propaganda constantly swaps/conflates black and white, just as in Orwell's book. It has been prohibited by a special law to call the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops a "war". Russian citizens have to use the euphemism "special military operation" instead of the word "war". Many graffiti are aimed at showing that the clean and incomprehensible words hide a terrible reality.

#nowar #Noputin

Happy Victory Day Stand up, children, with a "Z." There's no better letter in the world! Bloody painted lovely letter The half-swastika of victory. Have you won? Oh yes my friend. Got our orders, and we killed. That's the order we’ve got for peace Told to kill - we do with ease. Life, of course, is worse than death, Darkness - lighter than the light, Happy V Day over “fascism”, - Even if we're now the fascists. [blood-stained]

The poem refers to the new practice of Russian educational institutions being required to show their loyalty and support for the war. Teachers lined their children up in the form of a capital Z

[blood stained]

Putin Newspeak. Explosion - clap. Flooding - wetting. Fire - smoke. A conflagration with many corpses is a bonefire. Forest fire - thermopoint. Falling economy - negative growth. An epidemic is an increase in the incidence. Plane crash - hard landing. Occupation - return to the native harbor. War is a special operation. National traitors - everyone who is against Putin. An undesirable organization is a publication that writes the truth and/or exposes corruption. Putin attacked Ukraine. Thousands of dead. Millions of refugees. Destroyed cities, broken destinies. The whole world is against Russia, because Russia is 1939 Germany. Wake up! No war!

It has been prohibited by a special law to call the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops a "war". Russian citizens had to use the euphemism "special military operation" instead of the word "war". Many graffiti are aimed at showing that the clean and incomprehensible words hide a terrible reality.

No, I will never make my peace. There’s truth in all my curses. I won’t forgive, won’t throw myself into the iron embraces. Like everyone, I’ll die, I’ll kill — ruin myself, like everyone — but I refuse to stain my soul by justifying what goes on. When death is near, in darkness, fire, let my heart not forget: One cannot justify the war! One can’t, one simply can’t.

An excerpt from the poem "Without Justification" by Zinaida Gippius (1916)

In March 2022, the Russian military brutally murdered many residents of the town of Bucha in the Kiev region. In the Russian Federation, it is not allowed to talk about this; any mention of these murders is punishable under Article 207.3 of the Criminal Code (dissemination of knowingly false information about the Russian army). Several people have already received seven or more years in prison for discussing the murders in Bucha. The letter "Y" is formed with the image of two tied arms

Of desert lands the freedom planter, Before the star I rose to sow; Into the soil enslaved and scanter My pure and guiltless hand would throw The seeds of vigor and fruition — But only wasted good ambition And time and labor doing so... Graze on your pasture, peaceful nations! Miss honor's call, in slumber's grip — Why freedom? Herds have these vocations: Be meat to slay or wool to clip. They pass along through generations A yoke with rattles and a whip.

This poem by the famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin was written in November 1823. The bitter feelings in it have been suggested to have resulted from the defeat of the revolution in Spain, suppressed by French troops. After the defeat of the revolution in Spain, the absolutist monarchy was restored.

Why?

A large graffiti on a tower crane, which can be seen from afar.

It's not special operation but W<...>R

The word with missing letters looks like a partially-filled-out crossword solution. It has been prohibited by a special law to call the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops a "war". Russian citizens had to use the euphemism "special military operation" instead of the word "war". Many graffiti are aimed at showing that the clean and incomprehensible words hide a terrible reality.

On my shoulders pounces the wolf-hound age....(transl. by James McGavran)

This line is part of a very famous poem by the poet Osip Mandelstam (1891-1938), who died during the Great Terror in Stalin's camps in 1938. The poem was written in the early 1930s, and it speaks of the impossibility for a man to do what his time and his state demand of him. On my shoulders pounces the wolf-hound age, But I am no wolf by my blood; Thrust me, instead, like a hat up the sleeve Of the Siberian steppe’s warm fur coat, So I can’t see the coward or the soft bit of grime Or the bloodied bones on the wheel; So that all night the blue-fox furs might shine For me in their primeval beauty. Lead me into the night where the Yenisei flows And the pine reaches up to the star, Because I am no wolf by my blood And only my equal will kill me. (transl. by James McGavran)

“[do] you know what is [said here] about that”

This phrase is a prime example of a cryptic expression that indicates insider understanding (“you know”) using parallelism. An approximate translation would be: “[do] you know what is [said here] about that”. It requires further inquiry. Then you see two stray diacritics that shouldn’t be part of the spelling. Another double phrase with those two diacritics is: ХуЙ воЙне [FuCK the wAR]. And the green ribbon, which you can see below, is also a sign of anti-war resistance.

No wobbie

A young woman in Tyumen wrote “Net w***e” and managed to prove in court that she had meant “No wobla” because she did not like that fish. After that wobla instead of war became a very popular meme on social media, and perhaps as a result of this the case was reviewed: in December 2022, the court decided to charge the woman with discrediting the Russian army. Soon the image of fish appeared everywhere in the street and became the most popular coded symbol of Russian anti-war protest.

Cargo 200

"Cargo200" (KIA) is a Soviet military slang term for "killed in action" used during the war in Afganistan in the 1980's. It became popular again at the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. In the Russian word "GruZ," "Z" is Latinised and capitalized to make a reference to the letter "Z," one of the symbols of this war (the letters "g/r/u," apart from being part of the word for "cargo," also create a pun using the famous acronym for the Russian military intelligence service). This inscription was written above an advertisement promoting a private military company. The message can be decoded as follows: "Russia will kill you by sending you off to this war, and it will hide all the information about you when you are killed."
